Feeling really lucky at 25 years old. Just returned to Austin from the amazing birthday weekend in Mexico City. Somehow, I enlisted 8 coworkers (we’re mostly friends though) to come with me. For all but a couple, it was their first Mexican adventure.
I did this once before in college, and there’s something so fulfilling about showing people where I’m from. There’s multiple layers to it- part of it may be “proving” that I really did grow up somewhere else, having them understand me better, getting to share my heritage, watching them experience it as tourists, and the fact that it is a place I’m proud of.
There’s was a lot of food and sightseeing (although I wish we could’ve squeezed in more- one weekend is not enough), old friends meeting new friends, language challenges, new party tricks (ask me about the scorpion), and great market finds.
So what if everyone (but me of course) got a little bit of Moctezuma’s Revenge? If you ask them, they’ll tell you it was worth it.
